ودامون الشهيد
رؤيته الطفل يسوع قيل أنه كان هذا القديس من مدينة أرمنت، وذات يوم كان جالسًا في بيته وكان عنده ضيوف من عبدة الأوثان. فقال بعضهم لبعض: "هوذا قد سمعنا أن امرأة وصلت إلى بلاد الأشمونين ومعها طفل صغير يشبه أولاد الملوك"، وقال آخرون: "هل هذا الطفل قد جاء إلى البلاد المصرية؟" وصار كل منهم يتحدث عن الصبي. فلما انصرف الناس ومضى كل منهم إلى بيته نهض ودامون وشدَّ دابته وركب ووصل مدينة الأشمونين، ولما أبصر الطفل يسوع مع مريم أمه سجد له. فلما رآه الطفل تبسم في وجهه وقال له: "السلام لك يا ودامون. وقد تعبت وأتيت إلى هنا لتحقيق ما كنتم تتحدثون به داخل مجلسكم وأنتم جلوس تتكلمون من أجلي، فإني سأقيم عندك ويكون بيتك مسكنًا لي". أول شهيد في بلاد الصعيد فاندهش القديس ودامون وتعجّب ثم قال: "يا سيدي إني أشتهي أن تأتى إليَّ وتسكن في بيتي، وأكون خادمًا لك إلى الأبد". فقال له الصبي: "سيكون بيتك مسكنًا لي أنا ووالدتي إلى الأبد لأنك إذا عدت من هنا وسمع عُبَّاد الأصنام أنك كنت عندنا يعزّ عليهم ذلك ويسفكون دمك في بيتك. فلا تَخَف لأني أقبلك عندي في ملكوت السموات إلى الأبد مكان الفرح الدائم الذي ليس له انقضاء، وأنت تكون أول شهيد في بلاد الصعيد". فقام الرجل وسجد للسيد المسيح، فباركه ثم انصرف راجعًا إلى بيته. لما عاد ودامون إلى أرمنت سمع عباد الأوثان بوصوله وشاع الخبر في المدينة أن ودامون زار يسوع. فأتى عباد الأوثان مسرعين وشهروا سيوفهم عليه وأكمل شهادته. لما أُبطِلَت عبادة الأوثان وانتشرت المسيحية في البلاد، قام المسيحيون وبنوا بيته كنيسة على اسم السيدة العذراء مريم وابنها الذي له المجد الدائم. وهذه الكنيسة هي التي تسمى الجيوشنه وتفسيرها "كنيسة الحي" بظاهر أرمنت. السنكسار، 18 مسرى.
The Gospel of Matthew is the only one to mention the flight to Egypt made by Joseph and Mary with the infant Jesus, or to recall the Old Testament verse “Out of Egypt have I called my Son”. He was referring to the prophecy made in the Book of Hosea 11:1. Their journey crossing THE SINAI DESERT down to Egypt, and their time in exile there, followed in the path of a tradition that goes back to the very roots of the Bible. The Old Testament book of Genesis tells of the journey the Patriarch Abraham made down to Egypt. He arrived in Canaan, still called Abram, and was promised the land by God: “Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the Land”. Genesis 12:9-10. Abraham’s great-grandson Joseph, famous for his coat of many colours, was sold by his brothers and taken as a slave into Egypt. By accurately interpreting the Pharaoh’s dreams he eventually rose to become the most powerful man in the land after the king himself. Later, when famine again struck Canaan, Joseph’s brothers also went down to Egypt. And so the Children of Israel came to dwell in Egypt, where they multiplied through the generations until “there arose a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph”. It is generally believed that this would have been the mighty pharaoh, Ramses II, who reigned in 3,000 BC for 66 years, sired 90 children and carved his name onto more colossal buildings than any other pharaoh before or after him. He ordered the Children of Israel to be enslaved and put them to work constructing Egypt’s great cities. Fearful of their numbers he ordered the sons of the Hebrews to be killed. One babe, however, was saved and set afloat in the Nile. Rescued by the daughter of Pharaoh she brought the child up as her own. This was child was Moses, who grew up as a prince of Egypt but eventually set his people free, leading them on the Exodus out of bondage and back to the Promised Land. The Sinai Desert is a 24,000 square mile land-bridge linking Africa with Asia. This wedge-shaped peninsula thrusts itself into the Red Sea creating the Gulfs of Suez to the southwest and Aqaba to the southeast. To the north it is bound by the Mediterranean Sea. Its sparkling blue waters and long stretches of the bright yellow sand give the Sinai some of the most magnificent beaches in the region. Many of these, especially along the Gulf shore at Ras Muhammed and Ras Burkar, are famed as among the finest coral reefs in the world. The savage beauty of the Sinai Desert is a mixture of bare craggy mountains, dry rocky valleys and endlessly shifting sand dunes.
