Zacharias the Priest between Liturgical Texts and Images

Here is the complete English translation of the response text:
A Response to Fr. Yohanna Nassif Regarding His Statement: “The Martyrdom of Zechariah the Priest! A Fictional Story in the Synaxarium”
Love for contradiction, self-display, and objection has become a habit for some—to the extent that one feels they can only find a place for themselves if they disagree, or find something to offer only if they cast doubt upon what the Church has received. This skepticism is then presented in the guise of “scientific research,” as if confidence in one's tone could substitute for actual evidence!
Recently, an article by Fr. Yohanna Nassif was circulated again, in which he attacks the account of the martyrdom of Zechariah the priest, father of St. John the Baptist, demanding its removal from the Synaxarium.
The article does not stop at raising an objection; rather, it claims with full confidence: “Almost all Church Fathers and commentators are unanimous” that the Zechariah referred to by Jesus Christ is not the father of John the Baptist.
It then goes on to describe the account of the martyrdom of Zechariah, father of John, as: “A completely fictional story, containing a great deal of fabrication.”
Here lies the problem! When a priest speaks with such confidence, accuses an account preserved within Church tradition of being “completely fictional,” and then attributes a consensus among the Church Fathers against it, the reader has every right to expect very strong patristic and manuscript research.
However, when we return to the primary sources, we are surprised to find that the patristic sources themselves completely dismantle this claim!
In response, we say:
1. The Alleged “Patristic Consensus” Does Not Exist This is the first point that must be clearly exposed. Identifying the persona of Zechariah mentioned in the words of Jesus Christ (“from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah...”) was an ancient topic of discussion among commentators. What is remarkable is that among those who knew or accepted the tradition that the person meant was Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, are very prominent patristic names. How, then, does a well-known patristic difference of opinion get transformed into the phrase: “Almost all Church Fathers are unanimous”?! Therefore, speaking of a “consensus” here is historically incorrect—and perhaps merely a means to mislead the reader.
2. Origen Explicitly Testifies to the Church’s Knowledge of this Tradition in the 3rd Century Origen (whom the same priest defends despite his excommunication) explicitly testifies that the Church knew a tradition regarding the martyrdom of Zechariah. When discussing the Zechariah mentioned in Matthew 23, he states: “But a tradition has reached us...” He then relates the tradition concerning Zechariah and his killing within the precinct of the Temple. Here we stand before a testimony dating back to the 3rd century, where the author himself explicitly says it is a tradition that reached him. How, after nearly seventeen centuries, can someone come along and simply describe the origin of this account as a “completely fictional story”?! A researcher may discuss the details or favor one interpretation over another, but scholarly integrity prevents one from misleading the reader into thinking this tradition has no foundation in the early Church.
3. St. Basil the Great Explicitly States: “It Has Reached Us Through Tradition” The matter does not stop with Origen. St. Basil the Great also knows the tradition of Zechariah's martyrdom and uses very clear phrasing: that this account reached us by way of tradition. He then mentions the slaying of Zechariah between the temple and the altar. Thus, we are not facing a modern editor of the Synaxarium who fabricated a tale, but a tradition known to 4th-century Fathers who explicitly state that they received it.
4. St. Gregory of Nyssa Bears Witness to the Same Tradition St. Gregory of Nyssa also knows the tradition of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, linking his slaying to the location of the Temple and stating that he was killed there. So now we have before us: Origen – Basil the Great – Gregory of Nyssa. Where, then, is the alleged “consensus of the Fathers” against the account?! The existence of these names alone is sufficient to scientifically invalidate the word “consensus,” even before we review the rest of the testimonies.
5. St. Cyril of Alexandria Is Also Present in This Tradition Here the matter becomes even more significant for us as Copts. Academic studies tracking the history of the interpretation of this text place St. Cyril of Alexandria within the patristic stream that knew this tradition in his commentary on the Gospel of Luke. Therefore, the issue is not a strange story that crept into the Coptic Church in late ages. We are dealing with a tradition known to early Eastern patristic circles, found among major Fathers, and handed down to us through the heritage linked to the School of Alexandria.
6. The Tradition Predates These Fathers The story of Zechariah's slaying is present in ancient apocryphal Christian heritage, chief among which is the Protoevangelium of James. Here we must distinguish between two things: a book being non-canonical is one thing, and its serving as a historical witness to the existence of an early Christian tradition is another matter entirely. We do not cite it as an inspired book, nor do we place it alongside the Four Gospels; however, the presence of the account within it proves that the tradition is very ancient and was not invented by the modern Coptic Synaxarium. In fact, the appearance of the tradition in an early text, followed by its knowledge among Origen, Basil, Gregory, and others, reveals that we are looking at an extended, ancient Christian tradition—whether we subsequently debate the authenticity of every detail in its narratives or not.
7. The Article Misrepresents the Account in the Protoevangelium of James This is one of the most astonishing points in the article. The article attributes to the Protoevangelium of James a story where Zechariah carries the child John and flees with him to Jerusalem, places him on the altar, and then goes out, where soldiers meet and kill him. The article then proceeds to refute the story logically: How could the elderly Zechariah run all that distance?! How could he place the child on top of the altar?! Was it the altar of incense or the altar of burnt offering?! Would the child not have burned?!
The surprise, however, is that the Protoevangelium of James does not relate the story in this manner at all! In that text, it is Elizabeth who flees with the child John to the mountain, while Zechariah is questioned about the location of his son, refuses to disclose it, and is subsequently killed. Thus, a large portion of the “rational refutation” in the article is directed at an account that was never actually stated by the source to which it was attributed! Here the question arises: Before describing the Church's account as “fictional” and “fabricated,” shouldn’t the source cited have been read accurately first?!
8. Modern Coptic Scholarship Confirms the Authenticity of Zechariah's Commemoration in Liturgical Heritage We have a study by the Coptic scholar Youhanna Nessim (despite reservations and disagreements with some of his writings) titled: “Zacharias the Priest between Liturgical Texts and Images.” The study is published academically in the journal Abgadiyat and specifically examines the presence of Zechariah the priest in liturgical texts and Coptic art. The study does not discuss the Synaxarium alone; it reveals the presence of Zechariah in multiple liturgical sources and examines his depictions and inscriptions in ancient Coptic heritage. The issue, therefore, is much broader than a story randomly added to a modern edition of the Synaxarium. The aforementioned study traces the depiction of Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, in ancient Coptic art. One of the most notable examples is his depiction at Bawit, accompanied by an inscription clearly identifying him as: “St. Zechariah the Priest.” His image also appears in other Coptic sites, including the Monastery of Abu Hinnis and a church near Antinoöpolis (Ansena).
9. The Coptic Synaxarium Is Not Alone in Preserving This Tradition The tradition of the martyrdom of Zechariah, father of John, is likewise preserved in Eastern Christian traditions outside the Coptic Church. Therefore, when we find a tradition known in ancient Christian literature, then in Origen, then in Basil and Gregory, within the Alexandrian tradition, and continuously present in Eastern and Coptic traditions, it is not scientifically sound to reduce all of this to the phrase: “A completely fictional story.”
Here we must be more precise than those we are replying to: The existence of an ancient origin for the tradition of Zechariah's martyrdom does not necessarily mean that every detail appearing in every late phrasing of the story must be treated as an equally established historical fact. This is a legitimate area for research and comparison between manuscripts. We may find differences between one phrasing and another, or explanatory additions that entered some accounts over time. However, that is one thing, and claiming that the origin of the martyrdom of Zechariah, father of John, is “a completely fictional story” is something else entirely.
In Conclusion...
Fr. Yohanna, you have every right to conduct research, to disagree on the interpretation of a text, and to demand a scientific textual critical study of the Synaxarium—for it is indeed a book that requires manuscript analysis and comparison.
However, a researcher does not have the right to manufacture a non-existent “patristic consensus,” ignore Origen, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, and Cyril of Alexandria, bypass liturgical and ancient Coptic heritage, and then present the public with a definitive judgment: “A completely fictional story.”
Even more concerning is the subsequent demand to remove the tradition from the Synaxarium with such ease! Genuine research begins from the sources, not from the conclusion we wish to reach. Humility before the Church's heritage does not oppose scientific inquiry; rather, true scientific research makes us more cautious before describing what the Church has received over centuries as "fiction" and "fabrication."
If we wish to revise the Synaxarium, let us do so through manuscripts, the Fathers, and critical studies—not by tearing down an ancient tradition simply because some of its details do not appeal to our personal logic.

Celebration of Trans Joy and Resilience، والكاتدرائية نفسها وثقت المناسبة.

When the Person of Christ is Desecrated on the Pulpit
I used to think I had seen almost every form of theological deviation that could emerge from certain movements within the Episcopal Church—from the reinterpretation of texts, to tampering with the concept of marriage and Christian ethics, to subjecting the Holy Bible to contemporary culture. However, it seems the ceiling of decline has not yet reached its limit.
This time, we are not facing a disagreement over the interpretation of a single verse or a social issue. Rather, we are before an Episcopal priest, Rev. Flourish Klink, who stood on the pulpit of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York to propose that God is non-binary, go on to describe God as trans, project the concept of "sex assigned at birth" onto the incarnation of Christ, and extend this proposal to the Resurrection itself.
The sermon was delivered on March 21, 2026, during an official occasion titled Celebration of Trans Joy and Resilience, and the cathedral itself documented the event.
Here, I say to this priest with all clarity: By what right do you tamper with the Person of Christ in this manner? Who gave you the authority to take a contemporary ideological lexicon, open the Gospels with it, and reshape the Lord Jesus so that He becomes a reflection of twenty-first-century ideas?
This is neither a biblical study nor a theological discovery; it is the insertion of a predetermined idea into the text, followed by an attempt to force the text to speak it.
What is most astonishing is that when the author of this proposal reaches the point where some disciples did not recognize Christ after the Resurrection, they admit that the Bible does not tell us why they did not recognize Him, and then proceed to fill this silence with their own speculations.
Sir, when the Scriptures are silent, you too should remain silent. Do not turn your imagination into new revelation, and do not place your ideas in the mouth of the Gospel and present them to the people as Christian theology.
One of the strangest assertions made was the attempt to apply the concept of "assigned sex at birth" to Christ—as if the Virgin Mary looked at the child after His birth and decided on her own that He was male! What absurdity is this?
Before Christ was even born, the angel said to the Virgin: "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS." (Luke 1:31). And the angel said to Joseph: "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS." (Matthew 1:21).
Where, then, is the "assignment error" that some wish to forcibly introduce into the story of the Incarnation?
Furthermore, the fact that Christ did not marry, and that He interacted with women in a manner different from many in His era, is invoked as if it were evidence of something concerning His gender identity! Since when has a man's decision not to marry been proof that he is not a man? What, then, should we do with the thousands of monks, ascetics, and celibates throughout the history of Christianity? And has Christ’s respect for women, His speaking with them, and His raising of their status become evidence regarding His sexual identity? This is not a reading of the text; it is a twisting of the text until it says what the interpreter wants to hear.
Then we reach the most dangerous assertion: the Resurrection. Because some disciples did not immediately recognize Christ after His resurrection, it is proposed that Christ appeared in His "true self," which transcends male and female, and the matter is interpreted through the logic of "transitioning."
To this, we say: Enough with this absurdity. Christ Himself closed the door to such imagination when He said: "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself." (Luke 24:39). "It is I Myself." He who rose is the very same One who was crucified, and Thomas was invited to examine the marks of the Cross on His body. The Resurrection is not the discovery of a new identity, nor is it the correction of a former gender; it is the resurrection of the same Person in His glorified body.
There is also a grave theological confusion between the Divine nature and the Human nature. Yes, God in His Divine nature is neither male nor female in the human, biological sense. But how do we leap from this truth to the claim that Jesus Christ, in His humanity, was not male?
We say in the Creed: "Incarnate of the Holy Spirit and of the Virgin Mary, and became man." And the Gospel says: "And the Word became flesh" (John 1:14). The Incarnation was not a theatrical act, nor was the body merely a cultural symbol that can be redefined after two thousand years.
Anyone has the right to discuss philosophically how human language is used when speaking about God, but no one has the right to invent for us another Jesus whom Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John did not know, whom the Apostles did not preach, and whom the Church did not receive.
The undeniable reality is that an Episcopal priest made these statements from the pulpit of an Episcopal cathedral during an officially announced event. Here, the question becomes painful and legitimate: Where have certain movements within the Episcopal Church arrived?
We have disagreed with them on many issues, but for the matter to reach the point of reinterpreting the identity, incarnation, and resurrection of Christ through contemporary ideological concepts places us before a whole new level of deviation from the Apostolic Faith as understood by the Coptic Orthodox Church.
And let no one try to turn the issue into a question of: "Do you love these people or hate them?" This has nothing to do with that. Every human being possesses dignity. Offending any person because of their life or identity is one thing; criticizing a theological teaching delivered from a church pulpit is entirely another. Respect the human being, love the human being, serve the human being. But do not change Christ to conform to the human being.
Christ is not a cultural dough that every generation reshapes to its own measure; the Gospel is not a blank sheet upon which we write the latest theories; and the Resurrection is not an opportunity to project our contemporary vocabulary onto the Body of the Lord.
He who was born of the Virgin is the One who was crucified; He who was crucified is the One who rose; and He who rose said to His disciples: "It is I Myself." This is the Christ we have received.
As for the Christ who is reinvented every few years to match the latest cultural trend—let those who promote it excuse us: this is a Christ of your own ideas, not the Christ of the Gospel.
The tragedy is not merely that an individual uttered these ideas; people say all kinds of things. The tragedy is that such words reach the church pulpit, and that the Person of Christ, His incarnation, and His resurrection become subject to reinterpretation in service of modern ideologies.
Therefore, I say without hesitation to this priest and to those who adopt this approach: Hands off the Person of Christ. Change your ideas as you wish, and adopt whatever philosophies you choose, but do not make Christ a vehicle for them, and do not attribute to the Gospel what your own words admit the Gospel does not say. Enough with this tampering in the name of theology.
An Appeal to the Holy Synod
Finally, I address an explicit appeal to the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church to examine this documented incident as it sees fit, and to issue a firm ecclesiastical admonition to the relevant Episcopal church authorities, requesting a clear stance on these statements and on the measures taken regarding the priest who proclaimed them.
Theological dialogue between churches should not turn into mere meetings and pleasantries while statements are delivered from church pulpits that touch—from our Orthodox perspective—the very core of faith in the Person of Christ, His incarnation, and His resurrection.
The Coptic Church has the right to ask clearly: Do these statements represent the teaching of the Episcopal Church, or does it reject them? What is its stance regarding the one who proclaimed them from a church pulpit?
If there is no clear rejection or ecclesiastical action taken against these statements, I believe it would be legitimate for the Holy Synod to consider suspending official theological dialogue until the position is clarified. Genuine dialogue assumes, first and foremost, the existence of a common ground upon which what takes place can truly be called Christian dialogue.
The Person of Christ is not a matter for diplomatic courtesy. The Incarnation is not a secondary detail that can be bypassed to preserve relations. The Resurrection is not a space for intellectual experimentation. Faith in Christ precedes any dialogue about Christ.
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." (Hebrews 13:8).
May the Lord rebuke this blasphemer.
