How is Christ a complete human without taking a human person in His incarnation?
The Answer:
The word "person" in Greek is Prosopon (πρόσωπον). It is composed of two parts: pros (προς) + opon (οψεν). It literally means "toward the face," signifying one who turns toward another to interact and exchange a relationship.
- There are persons who are separate in essence and being, such as human beings.
- There are those who are inseparable in essence and being, such as the Hypostases (Persons) of the Holy Trinity. Each is in the other and fills the other. The Father is the source of the undivided being for both the Son (by eternal birth) and the Holy Spirit (by eternal procession).
The Prosopon of the Son and the Prosopon of the Father—despite sharing the same essence and nature (the indivisible and undivided essence)—exchange relationship and love. As Christ said to the Father: “For You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24), and “that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:26). He also says: “And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine” (John 17:10). The Father said of the Son at the Baptism and Transfiguration: “This is My beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17, 17:5).
The Person and Nature
The Prosopon (Person) is the bearer and owner of the nature with all its components; in the person, the nature exists and is established. The word Hypostasis means a person bearing a nature that exists within them; it refers to the person himself and the nature he carries.
- If a person carries a divine nature, He is God.
- If a person carries a human nature, he is a man.
- If a person carries an angelic nature, he is an angel.
- If a unique person carries both the divine and human natures simultaneously, He is God and man at the same time—that is, God Incarnate. This is what occurred in the Divine Incarnation.
The Oneness of Christ
The Lord Christ, in His own Person—already bearing the divine nature from eternity—bore the complete human nature within that same Person in the fullness of time. Therefore, St. Paul the Apostle says: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
The Owner of the divine nature became the same One who owns the human nature as His own nature. This Person who owns the nature is:
- Fully God/True God in terms of His divine nature.
- Fully man/True man in terms of His human nature.
The same Person did not add another "person" to His own. Therefore, there are not two "possessive pronouns" here—one owning the Divinity and another owning the Humanity. Rather, it is the very same One who was God from eternity and remains God forever, who became a true and complete man. As St. Athanasius said in On the Incarnation: "The Word of God came in His own Person."
