Baptism, By Michael Metry

{ شرح انجيل القديس يوحنا.. اصحاح 13}

Questions for Those Who Doubt the Sacrament of Baptism and Its Saving and Spiritual Work

† 1. If Baptism does not forgive sins (both original and actual sins), why were the sins of the three thousand people not forgiven immediately upon hearing and believing the preaching of our teacher, St. Peter the Apostle, but only after they were baptized, according to St. Peter's command to them (Acts 2:38)?

Likewise, why were the sins of Saul of Tarsus not forgiven until after his baptism, despite his faith, the appearance of Christ to him, and his calling as an apostle to the Gentiles? This is what St. Ananias, the Bishop of Damascus, told him (Acts 22:16).

2. If salvation is by faith alone, why did the Lord Jesus Christ tell Nicodemus that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5)?

Why did our Savior also tell His disciples:

"He who believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mark 16:16)?

Why did our teacher, St. Peter the Apostle, compare the salvation of the eight souls (Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives) through the ark with our salvation through Baptism (1 Peter 3:20–21)?

And why did our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, say that God saved us, not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, referring to Baptism (Titus 3:5)?

3. If Baptism is death, burial, and resurrection with Christ, and receiving His righteousness, as our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, stated in Colossians 2:12, Galatians 3:27, and Romans 6:3–5, because we inherited sin and were subjected to the sentence of death in Adam, as stated in Romans 5:12, then does our death with Christ take place through faith alone or through Baptism?

4. If Baptism is the sacrament through which we become members of the Body of Christ, as our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, said:

"For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13).

How, then, can we become members of the Body of Christ through faith alone?

5. Those who reject infant Baptism on the grounds that an infant cannot believe or understand should answer the following:

How were the children of the people of Israel saved, together with their parents, from Pharaoh's slavery by crossing the Red Sea? Our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, specifically identified their crossing of the Red Sea as a form of Baptism (1 Corinthians 10:2).

And how did children become members of God's people through circumcision without understanding what was happening, when our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, described circumcision as a symbol of Baptism (Colossians 2:11)?

Is there even one verse in the Bible that prohibits infant Baptism?

Furthermore, why do several accounts of Baptism in the Book of Acts use the expression, "He and all his household were baptized"?

Were there no children in these households?

Consider the following examples:

- The baptism of Cornelius and his entire household (Acts 10:47–48).

- The baptism of Lydia, the seller of purple, and her household (Acts 16:14–15).

- The baptism of the Philippian jailer and his entire household (Acts 16:27–34).

Our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, also mentioned that he baptized the household of Stephanas (1 Corinthians 1:16).

Were there no children in any of these households?

If infant Baptism were prohibited, the Bible could simply have said, "Except for the children," just as it specified in the miracle of feeding the multitudes, saying, "Besides women and children" (Matthew 14:21; Matthew 15:38).

Moreover, the Church has baptized infants since its earliest days. Why, then, do we object to their Baptism today on the grounds that they lack understanding?

If fathers and mothers are responsible for their children's physical, social, and educational lives, should they not be even more responsible for their spiritual lives?

And if the Lord Jesus Christ said that no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5), should we not all the more baptize our children to safeguard their eternal future, so that they may receive salvation from original sin and the sentence of death?

This way, even if they depart this life during infancy, they will already have walked the path of salvation established by the Lord through Baptism.

6. If every person has the right to baptize others, rather than this being reserved for priests, why did the Lord Jesus Christ specifically address His disciples when commanding them to baptize?

See Mark 16:14–16 and Matthew 28:16–20.

This indicates that there were instructions addressed to everyone and other instructions specifically addressed to the apostles in their capacity as priests.

We see an example of this distinction when our teacher, St. Peter the Apostle, once asked the Lord Jesus Christ:

"Then Peter said to Him, 'Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people also?'" (Luke 12:41).

Furthermore, we do not find accounts of anyone administering Baptism other than the apostles and those belonging to the priestly ranks.

7. Some argue that the word "water" in the verse, "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5), refers to the Word of God rather than literal water.

If that is the case, why did the Ethiopian eunuch, upon seeing water, say to Philip:

"Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, 'See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?'" (Acts 8:36).

Likewise, why did our teacher, St. Peter the Apostle, say concerning Cornelius and his household:

"Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" (Acts 10:47).

Our teacher, St. Paul the Apostle, also said:

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5).

Therefore, water means actual water; it does not refer to the Word of God.

The Teachings of the Church Fathers Concerning Baptism

St. Cyril the Great

Commentary on the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 13

"For those who have not been purified cannot enter the heavenly mansions above. Only those whose consciences have been cleansed through the love of Christ and who have been sanctified by the Spirit through Holy Baptism may enter them."

St. John Chrysostom

Homily 36 on the Gospel of St. John, Chapter 5

"What, then, is it that He wishes us to understand? He wishes to speak about Baptism, which is the fullness of power and grace: the Baptism that cleanses all sins and raises the dead.

He used the image of the pool as an illustrative expression of these things and other matters as well.

Initially, he refers to water that cleanses the impurities of the body and those who are unclean, just as it healed the lepers who were in the tombs or attending a funeral procession. One can also see that certain miracles in the Old Testament took place for this very reason: to point toward what would happen in the future.

Let us return to our subject. In the beginning, as I have said, we were saved through water from bodily impurities and various diseases. But God now wished to present to us a clearer image of the true grace of Baptism, so that He might heal not only those who were unclean but also those suffering from incurable diseases.

For images that come closer to the reality are more clearly manifested in Baptism, in suffering, and in certain other matters of the Old Testament.

It is as though you were looking at an image of the king's attendants: those standing near him are more clearly visible than those standing far away.

As for the angel descending to stir the water and give it healing power, this was so that the Jews might learn that the Lord of the angels is even more capable of healing the incurable diseases of the soul.

We must observe that the healing here did not result from the water alone, but from the action of the angel. The same principle applies to us: healing does not come from the water of Baptism by itself; rather, the water receives the grace of the Holy Spirit, and through this grace all sins are forgiven."

May you be kept in good health in the Lord.
