2 Corinthians 2:11

Meaning of "For We Are Not Ignorant of His Devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11)

This phrase comes from 2 Corinthians 2:11, where the full verse reads:

"Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices."

Context and Spiritual Meaning

1. Historical and Pastoral Context In this chapter, the Apostle Paul is addressing a situation regarding a member of the church in Corinth who had committed a serious offense and underwent church discipline. After the individual showed genuine repentance and sorrow, Paul urged the congregation to forgive, comfort, and reaffirm their love for him so that he would not be overwhelmed by excessive grief.

2. Direct Meaning of "His Devices" / "His Thoughts" The word translated as "devices" (or "schemes" / "thoughts" in various translations) refers to Satan’s tactics, tricks, and methods. Saying "we are not ignorant of his devices" means:

  • Believers and spiritual leaders are aware of the subtle strategies the enemy uses to cause stumbles or create division within the community.
  • When the adversary fails to keep someone trapped in a specific sin, he often shifts tactics to drive them into an opposite trap—such as despair, self-righteousness, hardness of heart, or unforgiveness.

3. The Specific Trap Paul Warned Against In this scenario, the primary tactic was excessive severity and an unforgiving spirit:

  • If the Corinthians refused to forgive the repentant believer, that person might fall into deep despair and abandon the faith.
  • At the same time, the church community would fall into the sin of harshness and lack of Christian love.
  • Thus, the adversary would gain an advantage over both sides—the individual and the church.

Summary

The verse calls for spiritual discernment and vigilance. It emphasizes recognizing how spiritual opposition exploits circumstances—turning justice into harshness and repentance into despair—and countering those schemes through love, timely forgiveness, and wise restoration.
